Ask Amy: I’m sickened by my granddaughter’s cheerleading, and her parents won’t listen

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:41:06 GMT

Dear Amy: I had a 42-year career as a speech-language pathologist, working with young children. Early childhood development was my professional specialty.I made sure to provide my own children with play-based preschool opportunities. As they grew and showed interest in certain activities, we provided those opportunities for them in art, music and sports. Both children are now successful professionals. Our son and his wife are the parents of two children, ages 3 and 1.They let us know early on that they would accept no input or support, even when they shared their struggles and challenges. Not even a book suggestion was welcome.I have respected their wishes, and I respond to texts, e-mails and rare phone calls with generic positive statements like, “Thanks for sharing that photo!” and “It looks like he’s doing great!”Now, our daughter-in-law is sending photos and videos of our 3-year-old granddaughter in a peewee “cheer” program. She is on a “performance team,” complete with uniforms wi...

The Right’s Desperate Push to Tank ESG and Avoid Disclosing Climate Risks

The House of Representatives released the first report from its ESG Working Group in late June, highlighting priorities for the rest of the 118th Congress and making clear that Republicans won’t stop “investigating” environmental, social, and governance investing while there’s still a chance to save polluting companies from having to report their actual emissions. At its core, ESG is about information: When companies report on their environmental, social, and governance risks, which can range from high greenhouse gas emissions to particular hiring practices, investors use that information to determine whether they think a company is a good investment. The Republican-led House isn’t the only entity that’s become obsessed with ESG investing over the past two years. From political advocacy organizations like the Texas Public Policy Foundation to state treasurers, the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Republican Attorneys General Association, the right wing has been on fire ab...

How picking 17th changes Orioles’ approach to MLB draft after top-5 streak: ‘Different kind of anxiety’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:41:06 GMT

Over the past four MLB drafts combined, only five players have been taken before the Orioles made their first selection. They’ll need to wait more than three times as long this year alone.Baltimore makes the 17th overall pick in next week’s draft, the organization’s first selection outside of the top five since 2018. Twice in the span, the Orioles had the No. 1 pick, allowing them to choose any eligible player they wanted. This year, 16 other teams will make their choice in front of them, altering how Baltimore’s amateur scouting department has put together its draft board.“It’s going to be a little bit different kind of anxiety,” Orioles director of draft operations Brad Ciolek said. “… It has been a little bit more of a challenge, obviously, trying to plan, trying to figure out who is going to be there at pick 17 versus pick one, pick five. You have to cast a little bit of a wider net and be mindful of the names who might fall,...
