Shaw, White go in MLB Draft Matthew Shaw’s professional baseball dreams are now a reality.On Sunday night, Shaw was selected No. 13 overall by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 2023 Major League Baseball amateur draft. A Springfield native, Shaw played his high school baseball for Worcester Academy before most recently starring at the University of Maryland.The slot for Shaw’s selection is valued at $4.85 million. Shaw impressed evaluators throughout the year as he showcased power to all fields coupled with a high walk rate and low strikeout percentage. El Salvador President Nayib Bukele nominated for re-election despite constitutional questions SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — President Nayib Bukele was officially nominated by his New Ideas party Sunday to run for reelection next year, brushing aside objections from legal experts and opposition figures who say El Salvador’s constitution prohibits his candidacy. New Ideas also announced that current Vice President Felix Ulloa would run for reelection in the ballot scheduled for Feb. 4, 2024. Bukele is highly popular among Salvadorans because of his harsh crackdown on street gangs, but he is considered controversial internationally. Man charged with kidnapping, weapons possession in San Bernardino County A 43-year-old Apple Valley man has been arrested on charges of kidnapping and being a felon in possession of firearms, officials with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department announced Sunday.  Deputies from the Apple Valley Police Department responded to a report of a kidnapping on July 7, at around 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of Apple Valley and Siskiyou roads where they located the victim and her vehicle.  An investigation into the kidnapping allegations revealed that the suspect, now identified as Larry Johnson, and the victim had been in a relationship. The two had traveled out of state together and when the unidentified woman did not wish to return, the 43-year-old allegedly forced her to return to Apple Valley with him and assaulted her on the trip back, a SBSD news release stated.  “The victim was able to get away from the suspect when they returned to the suspect’s residence in the 17800 block of Siskiyou Road,” the release noted.  A search warrant was ex...

RMC student t bike from Canada to Mexico for injured vets and CAF members A third year student at Kingston’s Royal Military College (RMC) is planning to bike the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in an effort to raise money for the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) program Soldier On.Brooke Baker will be taking on the 4200 kilometre trail that spans from Canada all the way into Mexico, with 200,000 total feet of vertical climbing along the route. She aims to make the trip in 3 weeks, which will mean riding about 200 kilometres per day to meet that goal.
