Want to help pollinators this spring? Expert suggests these tips

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:03:49 GMT

(NEXSTAR) — Spring is nearly upon us (technically, it starts on March 20) which means you could soon be preparing your garden. Whether you're growing your own produce or increasing your home's curb appeal, you may want to take into consideration a main target audience for your garden: local pollinators. Foods we enjoy each day — like fruits and vegetables, nuts, spice, and even chocolate and coffee — wouldn't be possible without pollinators. They also help to support clean water through their work in plant communities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture explains. Overall, the work of pollinators has a value of $200 billion every year, according to the USDA. That doesn't take into account the invaluable work they do in our backyard gardens. Are your old coins and bills valuable? When you think of pollinators, your mind may instantly go to bees: honey bees, bumblebees, carpenter bee, whatever it may be. But pollinators also include birds, bats, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, and sma...

These states could be on daylight saving time permanently if new bill passes

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:03:49 GMT

(NEXSTAR) - While a bill to make daylight saving time permanent in the U.S. is making its way through Congress, a separate bill has been introduced in the House that would give states the power to lock their clocks. Under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, states can choose not to observe daylight saving time - the time between March and November - but can't choose to stay on daylight saving time year-round. However, many states have enacted legislation that would put them on permanent daylight saving time if Congressional action gives them the opportunity. A new bill introduced by Representative Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) hopes to do just that. Rogers' bill, introduced earlier this month, would give states the power to stay on daylight saving time year-round. Allergy season is ‘earlier, longer and worse’ in these US cities, report finds “Remaining on Daylight Saving time could have tremendous benefits for the economy and people’s health. Furthermore, changing our clocks twice a year is an ...

Designer lists remodeled Wash Park modern farmhouse for $2.3M

When Rebekah Cholak’s RC Design Studio bought 462 S. Pennsylvania St. for $625,000 in February 2021, she envisioned what the simple brick box could become. And it took her nearly two years to transform the 869-square-foot, one-story home with a partial unfinished basement into a three-story, 4,690-square-foot modern farmhouse with a wraparound front porch and rooftop decks. The original home was built in 1924, and Cholak, who lives in the neighborhood with her 11-year-old daughter, knew she didn’t want to clear the property and start over.“I wanted to be a good neighbor, and there was lots of opportunity there,” she said.“I knew I wanted to keep the existing house but add more character. I wanted to take the farmhouse concept but make it more modern and upscale.”So, she kept the original brick exterior but enhanced it with German schmear. She doesn’t like to paint brick, so instead used a finishing technique that smears a mortar wash over the brick to protect it from the elements with...

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City prospect Tommy Doyle fired Sheffield United into the FA Cup semifinals on Sunday and then learned he will have to miss out on the biggest game of his young career. The 21-year-old midfielder is on loan at Sheffield and due to competition rules is ineligible to play against his parent club after Man City and Sheffield were drawn against each other in the next round. It means Doyle will be a spectator for the match at Wembley, when Premier League champions City will be favorites to advance to the final. Doyle struck in the first minute of second-half stoppage time as Sheffield beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal clash between the two second-tier sides. Blackburn had twice taken the lead through Ben Brereton and Sammie Szmodics. Sam Gallagher’s own-goal and Oliver McBurnie evened the score on each occasion before Doyle’s late winner. But he barely had time to enjoy his celebrations before learning Sheffield had bee...
