Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

Snoop Dogg and his High School Reunion: Snoop’s High School Reunion tour hits Irvine on Sunday, as the local rap legend heads up a bill that also features Wiz Khalifa, Too Short, Snoop’s old pal Warren G, Berner, and DJ Drama. That’s a lot of hip-hop talent on one bill, and Snoop alone would be worth the ticket price. The man just gets better with age.LA Weekly culture editor Lina Lecaro wrote about Snoop and his family’s business enterprise back in November.“Long Beach’s own Snoop Dogg is legendary for his laid-back yet biting flow, which makes any music he puts out or guests on ooze with languid cool,” she wrote. “Snoop has always brought the badass without the belligerence, the hype without the hurry, allowing his words and vibe to glide and shine on record and on stage in a way that seems effortless yet fully expressed. This, coupled with his smooth persona and style, has made him one of the most iconic figures in hip-hop, a steady and seductive voice in ...

Three people die after drinking restaurant’s milkshakes

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

Three people have died after drinking milkshakes from a Tacoma fast-food restaurant, Washington’s health department reported. The three were among six people hospitalized with an infection caused by one strain of Listeria bacteria. The same strain was found in the two ice cream machines at Frugals, a hamburger drive-through.The machines, which “were not cleaned correctly,” were taken out of use on Aug. 8, after health inspectors made the connection to the sickened diners, the health department said.Because Listeria can sicken people for up to 70 days, those who had a Frugals milkshake before Aug. 8 are advised to seek medical care if they’re suffering flu-like symptoms and are pregnant, elderly or immunocompromised. The bacteria was found in all milkshake flavors. The six patients associated with the case are five people from Pierce County and one person in Thurston County; they were hospitalized between Feb. 27 and July 22. All had conditions that made their i...

A’s owner John Fisher breaks silence, says he won’t sell team: Las Vegas interview

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

John Fisher has yet to do an interview with a Bay Area outlet since taking over as the Oakland A’s owner in 2016, or even since becoming a part-owner in 2005.But the infamously reclusive Fisher recently spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal for a question-and-answer session published on Wednesday morning and revealed several key details regarding the A’s planned move to Las Vegas. And the most important takeaway: Much to the chagrin of the A’s fans who have chanted “Sell the team” at nearly every game since the All-Star break, Fisher says he has “not considered selling the team.”“I’ve now owned the team with my partner Lew Wolff, it’s shocking really how the time flies, but since 2005,” Fisher said. “Our goal since then has been to find a new home and build a new home for our team.”Fisher said the A’s recently submitted their relocation application to Major League Baseball and its three-man relocation committee, expressing hope that it will be approved soon, though he admitted he isn...

Bay Area outdoors: A day trip or weekend nature jaunt is just what the doctor ordered

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

Breathing in the sweet scent of coyote bush and listening to the gentle drone of bees, a feeling of well-being washes over me. I’m outside a special cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains trying the latest trend in healthcare in the heart of Silicon Valley. This isn’t some costly high-tech treatment — it’s a dose of nature, which some Bay Area doctors have begun prescribing alongside traditional remedies.Research shows spending time in nature can lower blood pressure, anxiety and stress levels. In recent years, Bay Area doctors and organizations such as the Institute at the Golden Gate, which is part of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the nationwide Parks RX, have begun taking a more proactive approach to connect people with nature.Dr. Laurie Bostick Cammon participates in Santa Clara County’s Juntos Initiative at the Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center in Santa Clara, writing prescriptions for her patients to spend time outside.“Even if you can’t do a lot of adventur...

SF appeals court holds hearing on enforcing homeless sweeps in city

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

(BCN) -- The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will host a hearing Wednesday on whether to uphold a court order that bars the city of San Francisco from clearing tent encampments. In December, a federal magistrate judge ruled that San Francisco city officials cannot enforce or threaten laws against involuntary homeless people sleeping, sitting or lying on city streets. The federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on the basis that San Francisco did not have enough shelter beds for the city's unhoused population. Enforcing these laws when people did not have ample access to shelter would violate the Eighth Amendment's cruel and unusual punishment clause, she concluded. In response, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu filed an appeal challenging the definition of what it means to be "involuntarily homeless." Before the hearing Wednesday, a coalition of businesses and community groups will join a slew of San Francisco officials to speak out against the court order in a...

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus said Wednesday it dismantled a criminal human smuggling ring responsible for bringing boatloads of Syrian migrants from Syria, Lebanon and Turkey. The eastern Mediterranean island nation has seen almost daily migrant boat arrivals in recent days.Cypriot police said three months of investigative work resulted in the arrest of five suspects following a raid by a combined force of 40 officers on several homes in the island’s southeast.A Cyprus court ordered the detention of the suspects, all Syrian nationals, for eight days until police wrap up their investigation. The suspects face charges of belonging to a criminal migrant smuggling organization.Police spokesman Christos Andreou told The Associated Press that seven more Syrians were being sought in connection with the ring, including the ringleader who is believed to have fled abroad along with another ring member.Andreou said the police raid also found 44 Syrian migrants living in those homes, all of wh...

Children’s advocates ask FTC to investigate Google for targeting ads to kids

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:37:20 GMT

Children’s advocacy groups including Fairplay and Common Sense Media are asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Google, saying the tech giant serves personalized ads to kids on YouTube despite federal law prohibiting the practice. The letter follows a report from The New York Times last week that found that ads on YouTube may have led to the online tracking of children. The federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, requires kid-oriented websites to get parents’ consent before collecting personal information of children under 13.In response to the Times report, Google said last week that it did not run personalized ads on children’s videos and that its ad practices fully complied with COPPA. When ads appear on children’s videos, the company told the Times, they are based on webpage content, not targeted to user profiles. But Wednesday’s letter to the FTC — also signed by the nonprofit Center for Digital Democracy — says Fairplay, as well as indepen...

St. Louis proposal would ban ‘military-grade’ weapons, prohibit guns for ‘insurrectionists’

ST. LOUIS (AP) — As the St. Louis mayor pushes legislation that would prohibit “military-grade weapons” on city streets and make it a crime for “insurrectionists” and those convicted of hate crimes to possess firearms, Missouri’s attorney general is warning that such a law would violate the state constitution.Mayor Tishaura Jones announced the wide-ranging legislation Tuesday, noting support from several members of the Board of Aldermen. The board could begin considering the measure at its next meeting, on Sept. 15.“We come together around a shared vision: a safer, stronger St. Louis, ready to stand up for our values,” Jones said in a statement.Specific details of the measure have not yet been released, such as how “insurrectionists” would be identified and what “military-grade weapons” would be banned.Still, the proposal drew immediate rebuke from Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who wrote in a letter to Jones that he will “resist any effort to infringe on the...
